Mastodon anpassen
Da meine Instanz jetzt auch auf Mastodon v4.0.2 lÀuft, wollte ich die Gelegenheit mal nutzen und nachgucken, inwieweit man die nun von Haus aus customizen kann.
Und zu meiner Ăberraschung ist das weiterhin sehr dĂŒrftig: Es gibt ein Instanzen-Thumbnail, einen About-Text, Regeln, Feature-Checkboxen („Profilverzeichnis anzeigen“) und Custom CSS. Das war’s eigentlich schon. Beim CSS werden aktuelle Best Practices (CSS-Variablen) nicht genutzt, was einfache farbliche Anpassungen unnötig erschwert.
Die Argumentation, dass man zwar freie Software, aber immer noch Software anderer nutzt, ist also nicht ganz von der Hand zu weisen.
Mastodon & Co. sollten in Zukunft mehr Möglichkeiten zur Anpassung von Instanzen ermöglichen, ohne dass man direkt einen Fork des Quellcodes anlegen (und pflegen!) muss. Man stelle sich ein Theme- und Plugin-System und einen Marktplatz vor, mit dem sich die eigene Instanz komfortabel anpassen und erweitern lÀsst, wie man es etwa von WordPress kennt.
Eine Mastodon-Instanz, mit der man ausschlieĂlich Audio-Posts veröffentlichen kann, wĂ€re damit dann genau so möglich wie eine, die kleine Programme in ihren Posts ermöglicht oder schlicht und einfach im Corporate Design ihres Betreibers daherkommt.
Neue Redewendung: âTwitter kaufenâ

Which is funny, because when you use a federation protocol, that dictates how your software works and functions. You don’t get to control how your social network functions, the people writing the software do, and even then they don’t always have that much control either.

Im Zuge dessen habe ich mich nochmal etwas durch Tumblr geklickt und muss Marcel recht geben: Beeindruckend und angenehm weird (wie auch dieses Beispiel zeigt), was Automattic seit dem Kauf 2019 aus der Plattform gemacht hat. Alles wirkt/wird weiterentwickelt und die werbefreie Version hat mich ja schon Anfang des Jahres positiv gestimmt.
Jetzt noch ActivityPub-Support… Behalte ich mal weiter im Auge.
Update, 11.11.: Es wird immer besser – man kann Tumblr Checkmarks insgesamt 12 Mal kaufen und es so auf imposante 24 HĂ€kchen bringen. Take that, Elon.
Update, 22.11.: Das ging schnell. Der Automattic-Chef hat wirklich ActivityPub-Support fĂŒr Tumblr angekĂŒndigt.

Was m.E. fehlt: Eine simple 1-Person-Microblogging-Lösung, die ActivityPub-/Mastodon-kompatibel ist und sich so leicht installieren/betreiben lÀsst wie WordPress.
