A few months ago I switched to Pocket Casts for all my (cross-platform) podcast needs. I couldn’t be happier with the app, but there’s one thing: Podcasts have to be purple1 and so does my podcast client’s app icon. And while there’s a great variety of app icon designs within Pocket Casts already2, there’s no Apple-Podcasts-like, purple one.
Until now! Here’s my purple app icon for Pocket Casts.

Apollo made 7 billion requests last month, which would put it at about 1.7 million dollars per month, or 20 million US dollars per year. Even if I only kept subscription users, the average Apollo user uses 344 requests per day, which would cost $2.50 per month, which is over double what the subscription currently costs, so I’d be in the red every month.
Offensichtlicher Twitter-Move um auch hier Third-Party-Clients zu killen. Für mich ist es bei Reddit und Apollo wie zuletzt bei Twitter und Tweetbot: sobald mir der sehr viel bessere Third-Party-Client genommen wird, werde ich den Dienst nicht mehr oder nur noch in verschwindend geringen Dosen nutzen.
Es wird Zeit, das wir all diese Dienste mit Open-Source-Lösungen dezentralisieren. Sollen sie doch alle auf ihrem überteuerten API-Pricings sitzen bleiben.

My obvious choice would be a web browser, but I understand that’s kind of cheating. So my choice would definitely be Drafts, the mighty all-rounder among text editors. I use Drafts to store notes, formulate texts and publish (!) my blog posts, just like this one. My shopping lists are in Drafts as well as transcribed voice notes from on the go. If it were the only app on my device, my iPhone would still be pretty useful.

Nate Parrot1 hat einen neuen Browser entwickelt, der jedoch keine Webseiten aus dem Web abruft, sondern diese von ChatGPT erstellen und gestalten lässt – und zwar so als sei es 1996.
Um das automatisch generierte Retro-Netz zu testen, braucht man einen OpenAI-API-Key und kann dann hier die TestFlight-Beta laden oder das Repo selbst kompilieren. Großartige Idee!
On January 12th, 2023, without warning, Elon Musk ordered his employees at Twitter to suspend access to 3rd party clients which instantly locked out hundreds of thousands of users from accessing Twitter from their favorite clients. We’ve invested over 10 years building Tweetbot for Twitter and it was shut down in a blink of an eye.
Nun hat sich auch Tapbots offiziell von ihrem Twitter-Client verabschiedet. (Hier habe ich gestern Abend sehr viel mehr dazu geschrieben.)
Ich habe in den letzten zwölf Jahren immer mal wieder mit Tweetbot zugunsten anderer Third-Party Clients gefremdelt, zuletzt war es aber mein Lieblingsclient. Tapbots‘ Nachfolger Ivory hat gute Chancen das auch für Mastodon zu werden.
We are sorry to say that the app’s sudden and undignified demise is due to an unannounced and undocumented policy change by an increasingly capricious Twitter – a Twitter that we no longer recognize as trustworthy nor want to work with any longer.
Nachdem Third-Party Clients Ende letzter Woche überraschend aufgehört haben zu funktionieren (siehe auch diesen Blogpost von den Twitterrific-Machern “Iconfactory”), war Anfang dieser Woche bereits aus Twitters internem Slack geleaked, dass es sich nicht um eine Panne, sondern um eine beabsichtigte Abschaltung gehandelt hat. Während zunächst nur große Apps wie eben Twitterrific oder Tweetbot für iOS (das ich zuletzt nutzte) betroffen waren, traf es nun auch kleinere wie Twitterrific for Mac.
Twitter – schon vor Musk oftmals schwierig in der Kommunikation mit den Entwicklern, die den Dienst einst geprägt und groß gemacht haben – hat dann zwischenzeitlich “verkündet”, dass die Apps plötzlich gegen irgendwelche, unbekannten Policies verstoßen hätten. Und hat dann das Developer Agreement um folgenden Punkt erweitert (unter “II. Restrictions on Use of Licensed Materials, A. Reverse Engineering and other Restrictions”):
You will not or attempt to (and will not allow others to c) use or access the Licensed Materials to create or attempt to create a substitute or similar service or product to the Twitter Applications.
Das bedeutet, Twitter kann jetzt nur noch über die offizielle App & Website bespielt werden. Alle anderen Clients funktionieren nicht mehr oder bald nicht mehr. Für mich als Nutzer der ersten Stunde ein K.O.-Kriterium. Twitter unter Musk ist eine einzige Shit Show1 in vielerlei Hinsicht, wie The Verge unlängst umfangreich dokumentiert hat, der als Entwickler, Werbepartner, Nutzer und Gesellschaft2 nicht vertraut werden kann.
Dass an den Third-Party Clients kleine Unternehmen mit Menschen und deren Einkommen hängen, interessiert einen Elon Musk nicht und Twitter auch nicht mehr. Dass Twitters größte Power User diesen unbenutzbaren Mist, den sie App und twitter.com nennen, nicht nutzen wollen, auch nicht mehr.
That said: Ihr findet mich im Fediverse. Ich werde meinen Twitter-Account (schon aus Identitätsdiebstahlsgründen) nicht löschen, aber bis auf weiteres nur noch sporadisch und automatisiert bespielen. Einige Leute, deren Tweets ich weiterhin mitbekommen möchte, die den Sprung zu Mastodon aber noch nicht geschafft haben, verfolge ich über Feedbins Twitter-Intergration – solange sie noch geht.

The new, web-based Mastodon client Elk is really impressive.
Built on top of Nuxt, it works great as a PWA and has a lot of nice little UI touches. Now my favorite client on desktop and great on mobile as well. (Posted from Elk on my iPhone.)
