Great news for Mastodon’s app ecosystem: Tapbots, makers of the great alternative Twitter client Tweetbot, announced the development of “Ivory”, their Mastodon client for iOS and macOS (!).

Update, 24.01.2023: After Twitter’s ban of third-party clients and therefore the destruction of it‘s developers income, Tapbots discontinued Tweetbot a couple of days ago. Today they launched their successor Ivory in “early access” for 2 Euro/month or 18 Euro/year (which is a steal!). Here’s the website, here’s the App Store link.

Matt Mullenweg, name giver and CEO of Automattic, the company behind WordPress and Tumblr, announced in some Twitter replies (1, 2), that Tumblr will support the ActivityPub protocol as soon as possible. This will add quantities of tumblelogs to the fediverse and therefore make them compatible with Mastodon. Great news for an post-Twitter era!

That’s super interesting, because we’re hoping for some major services to become interoperable for some time now: In 2017 we thought that this would weaken facebook.com’s dominance, but now it’s Twitter we are trying to avoid.

Tumblr will bring several million blogs and users to the fediverse, much more than Mastodon’s own usage. It remains to be seen how Tumblr will extend and promote it’s interoperability in the future, e.g. if it’s possible to follow other, non-Tumblr, but ActivityPub-compatible content from within Tumblr.

Twitter has 330 million monthly active users and 166 million daily active users.

Elon Musk had 117 million followers, when he started a poll to ask if Donald Trump’s account should be reinstated. He claimed that 134 million people saw this poll.

But only 15 million users voted in the poll, which they didn’t know was coming. That’s only 4,5% of all Twitter users, only 12,8% of Musks followers and only 11,2% of all people who saw this.

“The people have spoken.”

A lot of my affection for Twitter comes from it‘s early & rich ecosystem of great third-party apps: Twitterrific was the first one, Echofon my first app love, Tweetie had a superb design and even invented pull-to-refresh, YoruFukurou had an outstanding desktop keyboard navigation, while Birdhouse saved our tweet drafts. Tweetbot brought Twitter clients to perfection.

I love that there’s resemblance of that with Mastodon. The official one is good, but Toot, Tootle, Mast, Mastoot (yes, these are their real names) and Metatext are even better. And new, promising apps like Mammoth are being developed right now. Exciting app times!

Da meine Instanz jetzt auch auf Mastodon v4.0.2 läuft, wollte ich die Gelegenheit mal nutzen und nachgucken, inwieweit man die nun von Haus aus customizen kann.

Und zu meiner Überraschung ist das weiterhin sehr dürftig: Es gibt ein Instanzen-Thumbnail, einen About-Text, Regeln, Feature-Checkboxen („Profilverzeichnis anzeigen“) und Custom CSS. Das war’s eigentlich schon. Beim CSS werden aktuelle Best Practices (CSS-Variablen) nicht genutzt, was einfache farbliche Anpassungen unnötig erschwert.

Die Argumentation, dass man zwar freie Software, aber immer noch Software anderer nutzt, ist also nicht ganz von der Hand zu weisen.

Mastodon & Co. sollten in Zukunft mehr Möglichkeiten zur Anpassung von Instanzen ermöglichen, ohne dass man direkt einen Fork des Quellcodes anlegen (und pflegen!) muss. Man stelle sich ein Theme- und Plugin-System und einen Marktplatz vor, mit dem sich die eigene Instanz komfortabel anpassen und erweitern lässt, wie man es etwa von WordPress kennt.

Eine Mastodon-Instanz, mit der man ausschließlich Audio-Posts veröffentlichen kann, wäre damit dann genau so möglich wie eine, die kleine Programme in ihren Posts ermöglicht oder schlicht und einfach im Corporate Design ihres Betreibers daherkommt.

Willkommen in 2022, willkommen in der Zukunft! Oder wie Craig Mod gerade treffend schrieb: “I lived to 2022 and all I got was this t-shirt, a mind-blowing telescope that can look back a trillion years in time, and across-the-board life-changing advancements in viral mitigation.” Das war’s dann aber doch auch schon! Danke, Merkel.

Und eigentlich wird der Jahreswechsel in diesem Blog ja immer von meiner alljährlichen Kinostatistik begleitet (die zuletzt vielmehr zur Streaming-Statistik wurde), flankiert durch ein paar in Zahlen gegossene Selbsterkenntnisse. Leider bin ich dazu bisher aber noch nicht gekommen, da 2021 auf den letzten Metern nochmal den Schwierigkeitsgrad erhöht hat und uns pünktlich zu Weihnachten mit einer akuten, zeitweise lebensbedrohlichen Nicht-Covid-Erkrankung in der Familie bedachte.1 Mittlerweile ist glücklicher­weise schon alles besser, aber es erfordert hier und da noch meine Aufmerksamkeit.

In der Zwischenzeit machen wir mit dem regulären Programm weiter und legen 2022 nahe, uns alle nicht so zu enttäuschen, wie seine Vorgänger. Wäre langsam an der Zeit, keiner hat Lust auf Part III.

P.S.: 2022 ist das Jahr der Personal Blogs, hab ich gehört. Das wäre doch schon mal etwas.

  1. Not-so-fun-fact: Intensivbetten mit Beatmung sind nicht so einfach verfügbar, wie man jenseits von Sachsen glauben würde. Den Platz zu finden hat für die Leitstelle in der Notsituation recht lange gedauert und zur Folge, dass wir – obwohl wir uns ja in der Reichweite diverser Großstädte befinden – gerade jeden Tag an den Arsch der Welt fahren dürfen. Nichtsdestotrotz und bitte nicht falsch verstehen: Wir sind froh und dankbar, dass es das Intensivbett dann doch und immer noch rechtzeitig gab. Es lässt einen nur noch mehr an den Impfgegnern (ver-)zweifeln, die solche Situationen in ihrer elendigen Ignoranz verursachen und unsere Gesellschaft so ordentlich beuteln. [↩]
