50 Years of Thinking Different

Apple feiert heute sein 50 jähriges Firmenbestehen – unter dem Titel, den auch schon der dürftigen Tim-Cook-Brief hatte. Die Animationen auf apple.com sind allerdings ganz nett, mit nettem Rewind-Video samt rückwärts abgespieltem Think-Different-Soundtrack (yay) und falschem 1-Bit-Display-Font (nay). John Gruber, selbst übrigens 52 und seit 24 Jahren an der vordersten Front der Apple-Berichterstattung, hat die Animationen hier versammelt.

Und passend zum heutigen Datum ein guter, aber fieser Apple-Aprilscherz vom Basic Apple Guy: Apple verkauft den Little Finder Guy – wir erinnern uns – als Blindbox-Toy. Zu schön, um wahr zu sein, auch wenn er wieder auf Apples TikTok-Kanal aufgetaucht ist.

WalkmanLand pays tribute to the pocket tape devices of yesterdays: the Walkmans. These analog machines are considered one of the devices that have most influenced the behaviour of people in modern societies. We want to collect all the once commercially available models under one roof.

Habe ich gerade viel zu viel Zeit damit verbracht, im Katalog zu stöbern, um herauszufinden, welche Walkmen ich einst mein Eigen nannte? Vielleicht. Wenn ich das getan hätte, hätte ich jedenfalls festge­stellt, wie unglaub­lich groß­artig das Produkt­design der mobilen Kassetten­decks war.

A full-speed Game Boy emulator for Playdate. CrankBoy is a fork of PlayGB and based on Peanut-GB, a header-only C Game Boy emulator by deltabeard.

Noch nicht getestet, aber liest sich sehr gut und sieht auch sehr gut, wie dieses Video von Zelda auf dem Playdate aufzeigt. Stellt sich heraus, dass das gestochen scharfe 1Bit-Display mit dem Grauton-Dithering wie gemacht für alte Game Boy-Spiele ist. (Danke an Inspektor Skadget für den Hinweis!)

The Whole Earth Catalog was the proto-blog—a collection of reviews, how-to guides, and primers on anarchic libertarianism printed onto densely packed pages. It carried the tagline “Access to Tools” and offered know-how, product reviews, cultural analysis, and gobs of snark, long before you could get all that on the internet.

At the time of its initial publication in the late 1960s, the periodical became a beacon for techno-optimists and back-to-the-land hippies. […] The catalog also had a profound impact on Silicon Valley’s ethos, and is credited with seeding the ideas that helped fuel today’s startup culture. Steve Jobs famously referenced the Whole Earth Catalog in a 2005 commencement speech at Stanford University [at 13:08], likening it to Google before Google existed.
