Twitter erhöht Zeichenlimit auf 280 Zeichen

Ich persönlich fand die 256 Zeichen von App.net immer etwas angenehmer, weshalb ich diesen Schritt begrüße, aber nach elf Jahren wird das Twitter auch nicht mehr den Durchbruch bringen.

Wie so oft startet Twitter das neue „Feature“ erstmal auf unbestimmte Zeit nur für eine kleine Testgruppe, anstatt das ganze mit einem groß angelegten PR-Paukenschlag zu veröffentlichen. Machen sie schon seit Jahren so und ist mir schon genauso lange ebenso unverständlich.

Update, 13:00 Uhr: Hier übrigens mein erster 280-Zeichen-Tweet. Nicht dass ich dafür freigeschaltet wäre, aber es ist ziemlich einfach dennoch mit 280 Zeichen zu zwitschern, siehe hier oder hier.

Update, 19:30 Uhr: Oder diese Chrome-Extension. Ehrlich: der Zug ist abgefahren, Twitter sollte die 280 Zeichen sofort für alle freischalten.

There’s no tracking, ad-tech, webfonts, analytics, javascript, cookies, databases, user accounts, comments, friending, likes, follower counts or other quantifiers of social capital. The only practical way for anyone to find out about a posting is if the author links to it elsewhere.

How Twitter, Micro.blog and Mastodon could team up to compete with Facebook

Brian Hendrickson has a point:

When small social networks like Twitter and Google Plus start to interoperate with open source networks and blogs, they could eventually form a large enough base of users to “flip the iceberg” and have more usage than the dominant, non-interoperable player: Facebook.

I don’t know if it will be any of these services, but I’m sure this will happen sometime in the near future. The W3C is actively pushing new standards like Webmention and Micropub to boost a more interoperable, „social network-like“ open web. My guess is that Google will be on there forefront of this movement, because they’re intrinsically interested in indexable and searchable content (and meta data), while Facebook keeps building walled gardens.

When this shift happens, Twitter will be an attractive takeover target again. And the day users are able to tweet to people outside of Twitter will be the first day of the end of the Facebook as we know it.

Ich bekomme für meinen Instagram-Account eay zwar auch täglich Passwort-Reset-Mails, werde ständig in den Fotos und Kommentaren irgendwelcher, mir unbekannter Asiaten erwähnt und bekomme ab und zu auch mal Anfragen, ob ich meinen Nutzernamen abgeben möchte (Höchstgebot bisher 2000 Dollar), das ist aber nichts im Vergleich zu dem, was einem mit einem wirklich populären Namen blüht.

Nico Kaisers Instagram-Nutzername lautet nämlich nico, was zur Folge hat, dass er fast täglich mit mehr oder weniger freundlichen Übernahmeangeboten konfrontiert wird. In diesem Tumblr sammelt er die Konversationen mit seinen Namensvettern, die auch so gerne nico wären, weil er doch zu alt sei, über gar keine Fanbase verfüge oder eben kein zukünftiger NBA-Star sei.

Peter Sunde of The Pirate Bay fame schlägt in diesem unterhaltsamen Vortrag von der TNW Conference1 in eine ganz ähnliche Kerbe wie Ted Nelson und meine Urgroßtante, indem er über einen Schwenk aus der Historie von TBP dazu kommt, wie man Technologie politisch einsetzen kann und dass man öfter mal nach dem „Warum?“ fragen sollte.
