Update, 07.11.: Eine überraschende Ergänzung: Das Intro ist, wie Apple selbst angibt und in diesem Video zeigt, „Made by hand“ – und nicht rein im Digitalen entstanden.
Apple launches App Store for the Web
Nachdem Meta mit Instagram für’s iPad und demnächst WhatsApp für die Apple Watch vorgelegt hat, macht nun auch Apple einen auf Captain Obvious und bringt den 2008 gestarteten App Store ins World Wide Web: einsehbar und durchsuchbar; sicherlich auch für das freundliche LLM aus der Nachbarschaft.
Was kommt als Nächstes? FaceTime als offener Standard? Oder vielleicht eine Kauf-/Download-Funktion im neuen Web App Store? Diese fehlt nämlich wie John Vorhees irritiert feststellt:
An even bigger difference from the native App Stores is that you can’t buy anything on the web. That’s right: there’s no way to log into your Apple account to download or buy anything. It’s a browse-only experience.

Die Macher der App Workflow, die 2017 nach Aquihire die Grundlage für die Shortcuts-App (deutsch: Kurzbefehle) von Apple wurde, haben sich – nachdem sie ihre Apple-Zeit abgesessen haben – zuletzt wieder mit „Software Applications Incorporated“ selbständig gemacht und den hier auch gefeaturedten AI-Layer „Sky“ für macOS entwickelt, der bald erscheinen und AI-Funktionen systemweit und App-übergreifend bereitstellen soll.
Ich schrieb dazu im Mai, dass es „mich nicht wundern würde, wenn eine dieser Firmen [OpenAI, Google, Microsoft oder insbesondere Apple] (wieder) bei diesem Team zugreift“ und das ist nun geschehen. OpenAI war’s, die gerade im Rahmen der Veröffentlichung ihres aktuell Mac-exklusiven Chromium-Forks ChatGPT Atlas überall erzählen, „ChatGPT [is] evolving to become the operating system for your life“.
Für Menschen, die ein Apple-Life führen, könnte das seit heute ein bisschen mehr wahr werden.

macOS Tahoe vs. Electron
Es scheint aktuell größere Probleme mit macOS Tahoe und dem Einsatz von Apps zu geben, die veraltete Versionen des Cross-Platform-Frameworks Electron nutzen. Craig Hockenberry hat ein Detection-Script für diese Apps erstellt und bei mir sind einige betroffen. Was sich auch mit meiner Beobachtung deckt, dass auf dem M4 immer mal wieder die mit dem Script ausgemachten Apps einfrieren.
Das Problem ist mittlerweile aber wohl von Electron-Seite gefixed und sollte in den nächsten Tagen & Wochen durch Update der besagten Apps korrigiert werden. 🤞
