Bleiben wir bei endenden Services: Glitch, der freundliche Dienst für experimentelle, kleine Node.js-Apps, stellt das Hosting eben dieser ein. Mir ist nicht ganz klar, was das für den „Rest“ von Glitch bedeutet, denn der Code-Editor alleine hat jetzt eher wenig Anziehungskraft. Von „RIP Glitch“ ist daher auch bei Chris Messina die Rede.
Für mich bedeutet das einiges an Arbeit in den nächsten Wochen, weil ich einige kleine, aber für mich wichtige Anwendungen dort laufen habe, die nun alle woanders hin migriert werden wollen:

Mozilla schließt seinen „Read it later“-Dienst Pocket am 8. Juli, den es 2017 gekauft hat. Zwischenzeitlich hatte Pocket rund 17 Millionen Nutzer*innen. Der Gründer und ehemalige CEO Nate Weiner schreibt auf Threads recht wehmütig:
It’s hard to see this for a number of reasons, but I gotta say: Today it feels harder than ever to find and spend time with quality content on the Internet. At the same time, the technology for understanding content that we could have only dreamed of 10 years ago just exists off the shelf.
This strikes me not as a lack of opportunity, but a lack of vision.
Zustimmung. Anstatt etwas aus diesem Schatz an User-Interessen zu machen, den jede*r Nutzer*in dort individuell gepflegt hat, hat man den Service mit ausbleibender Weiterentwicklung oder gar Innovation zugrunde yahoo’ed™.
2013 war ich als geflüchteter Instapaper-User zunächst selbst jahrelang Pocket-User bin dann aber 2020 (und bis heute) zu GoodLinks gewechselt, das die Links & Artikel lediglich lokal bzw. in der eigenen iCloud sammelt.

Ich kann das nur unterschreiben. Meine Feedbin-Subscription hat sich am Wochenende verlängert und keine Sekunde habe ich überlegt, den Dienst den ich seit 2020 nutze, zu kündigen.
Seit Juli 2016 vertraue ich meine (News-)Feeds dem RSS-Dienst Feedbin an. Die dort hinterlegten 272 Subscriptions lese ich aktuell in Lire am iPhone. Diese Apps wechseln (häufig) – von Reeder Classic, Unread, ReadKit bis NetNewsWire und …

Kleiner, feiner, neuer Webservice von Robb Knight, um Feeds zu Mastodon, Micro.blog, Bluesky, GitHub, Discord oder LinkAce zu crosszuposten. Formatierung ist dabei frei wählbar. Außerdem werden bei RSS- und Atom-Feeds namedspaced attributes und bei JSON-Feeds custom extensions unterstützt1. Etwas, was Tools wie IFTTT & Co. ohne Umwege schmerzlich vermissen lassen.
EchoFeed ist damit eine wunderbare Alternative zu besagten Tools, wenn es darum geht Posts von A nach B zu bekommen. Kostenpunkt: 25$/Jahr. Nutzt man omg.lol gibt’s 5$ Rabatt (genannt „Prami’s Version“2).
Ich hab’s bereits abonniert; was mir noch fehlt: Wortfilter, um manche Posts nicht „echoen“ zu lassen, und Kürzungsoptionen (Truncation), um Texte nach x Zeichen wie gewünscht abschneiden zu lassen.

Founded by Stewart Butterfield and Caterina Fake, Flickr was released to the public at the O’Reilly Emerging Tech conference in San Diego as a tool for sharing photos. Originally engineered as part of a multiplayer online game, one aspect of the project took on a life of its own, and Flickr was born. During an era when digital cameras were fairly common, phone cameras were just a grainy novelty, and the blogosphere ruled the internet, Flickr was an instant hit.
2005 folgte schon der Kauf durch Yahoo, gefolgt von Jahren der schwindenden Bedeutung und 2018 dem Kauf durch SmugMug.
Recycling von meinem Kommentar bei Michael, wo ich auch von diesem Jubiläum erfuhr: Flickr war toll und wegweisend damals (ich war sogar Gründer der zwischenzeitlich recht großen Germany-Gruppe und – gerade in meinen E-Mails nachgeguckt – von 2005 bis 2009 hatte ich sogar einen zahlungspflichtigen Pro-Account), mittlerweile verbinde ich damit nur noch die nervigen „Your account is in violation of our free account limits“-Mails (kann mich aus Nostalgiegründen, aber auch nicht zum löschen des Accounts durchringen).
