Here lies a nearly-complete archive of Whole Earth publications, a series of journals and magazines descended from the Whole Earth Catalog, published by Stewart Brand and the POINT Foundation between 1970 and 2002.

The Whole Earth Catalog was the proto-blog—a collection of reviews, how-to guides, and primers on anarchic libertarianism printed onto densely packed pages. It carried the tagline “Access to Tools” and offered know-how, product reviews, cultural analysis, and gobs of snark, long before you could get all that on the internet.

At the time of its initial publication in the late 1960s, the periodical became a beacon for techno-optimists and back-to-the-land hippies. […] The catalog also had a profound impact on Silicon Valley’s ethos, and is credited with seeding the ideas that helped fuel today’s startup culture. Steve Jobs famously referenced the Whole Earth Catalog in a 2005 commencement speech at Stanford University [at 13:08], likening it to Google before Google existed.

Ok, somehow I managed to get a copy of „Make Something Wonderful“ by The Steve Jobs Archive, which is currently going for $200-500 on eBay, for 86 Euros. 🥳

If you didn’t take a look already, here’s the wonderful digital version of the book, which is not available in stores, but was only given to selected Apple and Pixar employees. And here’s a detailed look by Arun Venkatesan at the physical and digital book.

Cool to have this at home now.

With respect for the past and excitement for the future, the Steve Jobs Archive offers people the tools and opportunities to make their own contribution.

Schöne, minimalistische Website, die (aktuell nur) aus Zitaten in Text-, Audio- und Bewegt­bildform von Steve Jobs besteht. Technisch einwandfrei umge­setzt auf Basis von Next.js und mit ein paar Schmankerln ausgestattet:

  • Die verwendeten Fonts sind Helvetica Neue (bei der Email), San Francisco (bei dem serifenlosen Text) und „LoveFrom Serif“, die Serifenschrift von LoveFrom, dem Design Studio von Jony Ive, bei Titel und Quotes.
  • Die 404-Seite liefert ein passendes Jobs-Zitat:

  • Das Logo des Steve Jobs Archive ist ein futuristischer Schlüssel (?), der sich bei näherer Betrachtung und Mouse-Hover als Apfelbaum entpuppt. Clever!

Schauspieler Noah Wyle eröffnet 1999 als Steve Jobs die Macworld-Keynote

Ich habe gerade ein mal mehr »Pirates of Silicon Valley« gesehen und bin immer wieder begeistert, wie treffsicher der Film bereits 1999 den Weg von Apple und Microsoft nachverfolgt und (auch für die Zukunft) aufzeigt. Was ich bisher jedoch nicht wusste, und erst nach Lektüre des Wikipedia-Eintrags erfuhr, war, wie Steve Jobs und Steve Wozniak auf die Darstellung ihrer Person reagierten.

Während Woz einfach Woz ist, also ziemlich zufrieden damit war, hat Jobs sich öffentlich nur über den Schauspieler Noah Wyle geäußert, dessen Nachahmung er für sehr gelungen hielt. Und offensichtlich sogar so gelungen, dass er Wyle 1999 zur Macworld einlud und ihn an seiner Stelle die Keynote eröffnen ließ. Habe ich, wie gesagt, bisher nicht gewusst und auch noch nie gesehen – und da es ja vielleicht einigen von euch ähnlich gehen könnte, hier das Video des Auftritts:

Steve Jobs über das Leben und Scheitern

Die Monetarisierung von Steve Jobs‚ digitalen Überresten geht weiter mit einem 1994 geführten Interview der Santa Clara Valley Historical Association, die demnächst in Gänze käuflich zu erwerben sein wird. When you grow up you, tend to get told that the world is the way it is and your life is just to live your life inside the world, try not to bash into the walls too much, try to have a nice family, have fun, save a little money. That´s a very limited life. Life can be much broader, once you discover one simple fact, and that is that everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you. And you can change it, you can influence it, you can build your own things that other people can use. Once you learn that, you´ll never be the same again.
