Eine Deklaration für offene, dezentrale Social-Plattformen und Messaging-Protokolle in, aus und für Europa. Heute vorgestellt auf der PublicSpaces Conference in Amsterdam und mitgetragen u.a. von A New Social, Eurosky und Mastodon. Das neue, europäische Netzwerk W Social, das wie Bluesky oder eben Eurosky ebenfalls auf dem AT-Protokoll aufsetzt, fehlt hier allerdings auffälligerweise.

Ansonsten richtig und wichtig. Während Demokratie, Meinungsfreiheit, Vernetztheit und Gemeinsamkeit überall auf der Welt ins Hintertreffen geraten, sollten wir das, was Europa und die EU auszeichnet, auch im Netz fördern und vorleben.

Das Weiße Haus hat eine neue App 1 (Version 47.0.1 🙄) und Entwickler*in Thereallo hat sich diese mal genauer angeschaut und gröbste Fehler und Überwachungsinfrastruktur darin entdeckt. Als jemand der sich zufälligerweise mit genau diesem Tech-Stack auskennt, kann ich bestätigen: so macht man das nicht.

Times New Resistance: a Times New Roman impersonator that autocorrects the autocrats

Was eine großartige Idee von Abby Haddican, einer Designerin aus Minnesota: Eine aktivistische Font, die sich als andere Font ausgibt und bestimmte Worte ändert.

Times New Resistance autocorrects specific words as they are typed. For example, the word ICE autocorrects to the Goon Squad and the word Trump autocorrects to Donald Trump is a felon.

To the untrained eye, Times New Resistance looks just like Times New Roman – the official font of the U.S. State Department. When you install the font, it will appear in your font menus as Times New Roman, with an extra space between the words Times and New.

So wird z.B. „DOJ“ zu „clown town“, „Fox News“ zu „propaganda“ und „gay“, „trans“ oder „women“ zu „gay / trans / women rights are human rights“. Aus Bezos, Musk und Zuckerberg wird jeweils „Greedy Creep“.

Das Ganze funktioniert über Glyph Substitution: Eine Zeichenkette wird visuell durch eine andere Glyphenfolge ersetzt, ohne den eigentlichen Text zu verändern (klassischerweise kennt man das von Ligaturen wie „fi“). We started this project with a simple question: “How can we make global inequality more tangible?” From that came an idea: an interactive simulation that lets people experience, statistically, where and how they might be born.

Each spin randomly assigns you a country based on the number of births per country. The higher a country’s number of births, the more likely you are to land there. The metrics you see — life expectancy, income, education and more — show what life on average looks like for someone born in that place.
