Tim Cook to become Apple Executive Chairman, John Ternus to become Apple CEO

A new person will be stepping into what I know in my heart is the best job in the world. That leader is John Ternus, a brilliant engineer and thinker who has spent the past 25 years building the Apple products our users love so much, obsessed with every detail, focused on every possible way we can make something better, bolder, more beautiful, and more meaningful. He is the perfect person for the job.

This is not goodbye. But at this moment of transition, I wanted to take the opportunity to say thank you. Not on behalf of the company, this time, though there is a wellspring of gratitude for you that overflows inside our walls. But simply on behalf of me. Tim. A person who grew up in a rural place in a different time and, for these magical moments, got to be the CEO of the greatest company in the world.

50 Years of Thinking Different

Fifty years ago in a small garage, a big idea was born. Apple was founded on the simple notion that technology should be personal, and that belief – radical at the time – changed everything.

25 years from now, when Apple is celebrating its 75th, that future CEO won’t be quoting from any of the ad campaigns Apple ran while Cook was CEO, because there are no lines worth remembering from them.

50 Years of Thinking Different

Read a letter from CEO Tim Cook as he reflects on 50 Years of Apple.

The Tim Cook Era Is Fully Cemented

On 16 September 1997, Steve Jobs became interim CEO of Apple. 5,090 days later, he handed the reins to Tim Cook, weeks before he died.

5,090 days after 24 August 2011 is today. The Cook era is now as long as the Jobs renaissance era.
