Amazon has invented the world’s least necessary podcast

Amazon has launched a new feature that uses AI to generate a short, podcast-like audio segment where two „hosts“ discuss the merits and reviews of a specific product.

Hier ein Beispiel auf X (habe leider keines auf anderen Plattformen gefunden). Während AI-Podcasts per NotebookLM z.B. zu einem wissen­schaft­lichen Doku­ment ja durchaus hilf­reich sein können, ist das, nun ja, vertonter AI-Slop wie er im KI-generierten Buche steht.

Oder wie John Gruber schreibt:

I don’t know what’s worse: that anyone at Amazon thought actual people would really listen to these, or if actual people really are listening to them.

Amazon buys MGM for $8.45 billion

Amazon has reached a deal to acquire the film and TV company MGM for $8.45 billion, the companies announced today. It’s a significant acquisition for the e-commerce giant, and it means it will own a library of content that’s reported to consist of around 4,000 films and 17,000 hours of TV. The acquisition is likely to help Amazon attract even more big-spending Prime subscribers as its Prime Video service competes with the likes of Netflix and Disney Plus.

Jeff Bezos, founder and chief executive of Amazon, has decided to give you a bonus. In fact, he has decided to give every single employee of Amazon — some 876,000 people — a one-time pandemic bonus. A $105,000 bonus. Serious money. The kind of money that, if invested over a couple of decades, would give you a real retirement nest egg.

The crazy thing? The money he is giving you — it’s merely the extra wealth he gained during the pandemic, wealth that you built. After he has paid out those $92 billion in bonuses, he will still be comfortably off. In fact, as rich as he was before coronatime.

Of course, Bezos isn’t going to do this.

“The books will stop working”

Microsoft schließt seinen eBook-Store wegen Erfolglosigkeit zum heutigen 1. Juli, was bedeutet dass alle gekauften Bücher mit Abschaltung der dazugehörigen DRM-Server aufhören zu funktionieren (!). Das ganze wurde mit nur zwei (!) Monaten Vorlaufzeit angekündigt. Kunden sollen ihre Einkäufe erstattet bekommen. Wer sich Notizen in den DRM-geschützten Microsoft-eBooks gemacht hat, verliert diese, bekommt aber 25$ „Entschädigung“.

Der Fall unterstreicht einmal mehr die offenkundigen Probleme, die es mit dem DRM-gestützten Content-Vertrieb gibt: once it’s gone, it’s gone. Microsoft – und wenn es bei ihnen soweit ist wahrscheinlich auch Amazon und Apple – ist natürlich in der glücklichen Lage das Problem mit Geld aus dem Weg zu räumen, was für kleinere Anbieter mit DRM-Content oftmals keine Lösung ist und mit dem Abschalten der Rechteinfrastruktur wären Inhalte und Geld unwiderruflich weg.

Ich würde daher weiterhin dazu raten, DRM-freie Inhalte zu kaufen, wo es nur geht. (Streaming ist mit seiner sowieso zeitlichen Restriktion da eine Ausnahme.) Da ich aber hauptsächlich Sach- und Fachbücher auf meinem Kindle lese, kann ich die meistens direkt ohne lästiges DRM kaufen. Wenn es aber doch mal ein eBook direkt von Amazon sein muss, gibt es da auch Wege.

Also befreit euren Content, damit er so lange funktioniert (!), wie ihr wollt. Das ist die Welt, in der wir jetzt leben.

Jeff Bezos wollte sein Internetunternehmen ursprünglich Relentless nennen. Das heißt unerbittlich, unnachgiebig, erbarmungslos. Freunde rieten ihm ab. Dann wählte er den Namen Amazon, nach dem großen mitreißenden Fluss. Aber bis heute leitet die Website relentless.com direkt auf Amazon weiter.

Wusste ich, trotz Lektüre des Everything Stores, auch noch nicht. Gelernt im typisch kritischen Radio-Feature „Disruptor Amazon – Wie Zerstörung unser Leben schöner machen soll“ von Peter Kessen1, das auch als Podcast verfügbar ist und bei dem sich trotz dystopischer Musikuntermalung und anstrengendem Technologie­pessimismus ggf. das Reinhören lohnt (Stichwort Arbeits­bedingungen und Monopolismus).
